I grew bored with the theme I was using for mattuhrich.com so I decided to create a new one. And I find it easier to design a new theme than to create the crummy content that makes up this site. Since all the themes I’ve designed in the past use sans-serif fonts, I went with a serif font, specifically, good old Times New Roman. I was also weary of the standard site design of post text with a side-bar on the right or left. I realized that I rarely used the links on my site and other peoples site, so they could be banished to the bottom of the page. I’ll put a few important links under the heading along with the search box as I continue to develop the theme. Maybe I’ll use something like ClickHeat to see if visitors clink on the links at the bottom of the page a lot and move them if they do. I’d probably only be seeing my own clicks since I’m the only regular visitor to this site.

I set up my camera today to try to take some pictures of birds at the bird feeder. Of course I didn’t see any even after waiting around for 10 or 15 minutes. I left the camera there and did some other stuff until I noticed the cat sitting on here window perch looking at the bird feeders with her tail swishing… good cat. Normally I don’t see the birds she’s looking at until she drops their corpses at my feet. I do feel kind of conflicted about that… while I enjoy watching birds, I also enjoy having a cat that is a mighty hunter.

Our family was coming home from running an errand when we noticed a red-tailed hawk sitting in the grass near the driveway. I dropped everything and ran for the camera. When I got a little closer I could see that he was standing on a dead rabbit that had been in the road earlier. I snapped a couple of shots before he got spooked and tried to fly off with the rabbit. It was too heavy and he dropped it soon after taking off. I like this picture. You can see guts hanging out of the bottom of the rabbit. What’s up, Doc?

Understanding Exposure (Revised Edition)
Getting the correct exposure can, at times, be difficult. The automatic modes on most cameras can do a reasonable job of giving you settings for a properly exposed picture, but most times this is not the “correct” exposure. It doesn’t give you any creative control over depth of field or shutter speed. Understanding Exposure seeks to give the reader an understanding of how exposure works and how you can use the camera’s manual mode to get the best results.

I made a flash diffuser for my camera after reading this how-to article in a forum.
