I’m sitting here in my living room watching the NCAA tournament in glorious 1080i HD. I realized I was hearing something that I hadn’t heard in quite a while. One of the sounds of spring and summer where I live on Friday nights is the roar of dirt-track sprint cars coming from Williams Grove Speedway just a couple of miles away.

The sound isn’t too bad if you have the windows closed, which is the case for us most of the summer as I try to chill the house to the low 60s with the central AC system we had put into the house as soon as we moved in. I can’t imagine how loud it is at the track. Deafness must be a common problem amongst the simple back-country folk that make up the majority of the audience.

This morning I noticed a yellow goldfinch for the first time this spring. They’ve been gray and dull for the winter instead of looking like this…
